How Often Do People Vacuum?
When it comes to how often people vacuum their homes we found that 32% of people break out their vacuum cleaner once a week or less.
This is interesting as the perception particularly after the pandemic was of people obsessed with cleaning but the results don’t quite mirror this.
Around 1 in 3 people (30%) vacuum their homes a few times a week whilst 22% of people vacuum their homes once a day.
There are then 12% of people who actually vacuum more than once a day.
4% of people only vacuum when they believe it needs to be done rather than working to any kind of set schedule.
How Often Should You Vacuum?
Interestingly enough it appears as though the majority of people (at least 64%) follow expert advice on how often you should vacuum:
- Carpets and Rugs – Twice a Week
- Hardfloors – Once a week
- High Traffic areas – More frequently
- Homes with pets – Daily
How Long Do You Vacuum For?
When it comes to how long people vacuum, 54% of respondents vacuum for less than 30 minutes.
In total 77% of people vacuum for less than an hour, whilst 23% of people spend between an hour or two vacuuming their homes.
The data suggests that cordless vacuum cleaners that have 30-minute run times would actually suit more than 1 in 2 people as they tend to vacuum for less than 30 minutes at a time.
What Type of Vacuum Cleaner Do You Have?
Despite the advent of cordless stick vacuum cleaners, the most popular vacuum cleaner type is the classic upright vacuum. Our survey found that 41% of people own upright vacuum cleaners. This suggests that upright vacuum cleaners are the best-selling vacuum type on the market and the one that keeps people most satisfied.
The second most used vacuum cleaner type are cordless (stick) vacuums with 27% of people owning at least one.
Cylinder (canister) vacuums are the third most owned type with 18% of people owning at least one.
7% of of people own handheld vacuum cleaners. This is matched by the number of people who own robot vacuum cleaners (7%) showing how well established this option has become in the general vacuum cleaner market.
Would You Consider Buying a Robot Vacuum Cleaner?
Despite the apparent rise in the popularity of robot vacuum cleaners, an overwhelming 81% of people surveyed would not consider buying a robot vacuum.
Only 19% of people would consider buying a robot vacuum cleaner.
This suggests that the market for robot vacuum cleaners still has some way to go before consumers are convinced of the value that robot vacuums can bring to their cleaning routine.
There may be several reasons why people are not yet keen on buying vacuum cleaners:
- They’re still too expensive
- There’s not enough awareness of their benefits
- There are not enough choices available on the market
Whatever the reason, at the moment at least it is clear people are not quite ready to make the jump.
What Is The Most Important Factor for You When Buying a New Vacuum Cleaner?
When it comes to the what consumers value the most in terms of vacuum cleaner features, dust pickup/suction level came right at the top of the list by a significant margin. An overwhelming majority of 81% of people consider dust pickup/suction level to be the most important factor when considering which vacuum cleaner to buy.
This is in many ways not such a surprise as the suction power of a vacuum cleaner will make or break its ability to get the job done correctly.
Following suction level, 12% of people value quality and durability over anything else when buying new vacuums. This cohort may be well suited to German made vacuum cleaner brands which traditionally have a reputation for providing high-quality and durable vacuum cleaners.
Surprisingly enough only 5% of people consider price to be the most important factor when buying a new vacuum clear. This may suggests that most customers may be willing to pay more if they can get a vacuum cleaner that has excellent suction and is of a high quality.
Only 1% of people consider the power/wattage rating of a vacuum cleaner to be the most important factor when buying. Whilst another 1% believe the brand name is the most important factor.
Which Vacuum Cleaner Brand Do You Rate Most Highly?
When asked which vacuum cleaner brand they rated most highly 58% of respondents said Shark was their preferred brand for vacuum cleaners.
Dyson was the next most frequently cited favourite vacuum brand with 12% of respondents stating they preferred Dyson as their vacuum cleaning brand of.
This may come as a surprise to many as Dyson in the UK at least, is said to be the most used vacuum cleaner brand. Thus despite Dyson’s dominance of market share at the moment, at least in the UK, Shark appears to be making in-roads in terms of user perception and preference.
4% of respondents stated that Hoover was their favourite vacuum cleaner brand.
Which Vacuum Cleaner Brand Is Best for Homes With Pets?
When it comes to which vacuum cleaner brand is best for homes with pets, 67% of people said Shark was the best vacuum brand for pets. This may well be a result of the number of models that Shark has aimed specifically at homes with pets as well as features such as their pet power brush.
In any case clearly what Shark provides with their vacuum cleaners for pet owners appears to be working as they are a good margin ahead of their closest rival Dyson.
22% of respondents stated that they felt Dyson was the best vacuum cleaner brand for homes with pets.
Third on the list was VAX, with 9% of people stating that they felt it was the best vacuum cleaner brand for people with pets.
In fourth place was Hoover with 1% of people claiming it was the best vacuum cleaner brand for homes with pets.
