Robotic Vacuum Cleaner Market
Robotic vacuum cleaners have increased significantly in popularity in recent years with the global market estimated to be valued at $3bn as of 2020. This is expected to grow substantially up until 2027 with a projected value of $9.41bn by then.
The growth in the robotic vacuum cleaner segment is being driven by a range of factors including:
- Less Time For Cleaning Activities: As consumers have increasingly less time to dedicate to cleaning activities they’re searching for more efficient ways to get the job done and robot vacuums represent an effective way to save time on daily vacuuming.
- Increased Disposable Income: A general increase in disposable income especially in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific countries has helped the growth in value of the robotic vacuum cleaner market. With higher levels of income and dual-income households with less time on their hands, robot vacuum sales have benefitted from those in search of convenience in home cleaning.
- Growing Working Population: As the global working population has continued to grow in the last decade this has helped to contribute to more individuals with disposable income and less time who are more open to needing appliances like robotic vacuum cleaners.

Robot Vacuum Cleaner Segmentation
The robot vacuum cleaner market is dominated by floor vacuum cleaners which account for 82.4% of the market as of 2019. This follows the fact that most consumers will be looking at robot vacuums as direct replacements or complements to regular floor vacuums.
Robotic Pool Cleaners
Robot pool vacuum cleaners is another segment that is expected to experience significant growth of 16% between 2020 and 2027. Research by Maytronics estimates that out of 27.4 million total pools, only 4.3m (16%) are cleaned by robots meaning there’s significant potential for growth within this segment of the market.
The market for domestic robotic cleaners is dominated by Israel-based Maytronics which accounts for 50% of the market share.
Total annual revenues for Maytronics for 2020 were $320million (NIS 1.076bn) putting the total value of the global robot pool cleaner market at around $640million considering Maytronics accounts for half of the global total.

Window Cleaning Robot Vacuums
Alongside floor and pool vacuum cleaners, window cleaning robotic vacuums take a significant share of the market. Both domestic, as well as commercial window cleaning, is increasingly being performed with robot vacuum cleaners.
Robot Vacuum Distribution Channels
The market for robot vacuum cleaners is heavily weighted towards offline distribution in comparison to online sales. In fact, 67.3% of sales in 2019 were conducted offline.
This is likely driven by the need for consumers to better understand robot vacuum capabilities prior to committing to making a purchase that would not favour online sales as much. This is in stark contrast to traditional vacuum cleaners where the majority of sales take place online.
Another factor likely driving offline sales of robot vacuum cleaners vs online channels is that more stores are dedicating floor and shelf space to robot vacuums as they become increasingly popular amongst consumers.
Nonetheless, online sales of robot vacuums are still expected to grow significantly in the coming years with a CAGR of 19.1% between 2020 and 2027.

Robot Vacuum Market Regional Trends
The robot vacuum market is heavily weighted to sales in the Asia Pacific region which accounted 36.2% of sales in 2019. This was largely driven by demand from China with a mixture of a growingly affluent population, low cost of the product as well as the presence of strong regional players.
Asia pacific aside, Europe also plays a big part in the global robot vacuum market.

Interesting Facts About Vacuum Cleaners
Vacuum cleaners, like so many other modern-day appliances, have an interesting start. Below we take a look at some notable facts and statistics:
When Was The First Vacuum Cleaner Invented?
The first known vacuum cleaner was invented in 1860 by Daniel Hess in Iowa, USA. In July 1860 he received a patent (US290977A) for a machine called a ‘carpet sweeper’ that used a manually powered vacuum method for cleaning carpets.
When Was The First Powered Vacuum Cleaner Invented?
In 1901 British engineer, Hubert Cecil Booth, invented one of the first powered vacuum cleaners, the Puffing Billy. Struck by the possibility of vacuum cleaners sucking up dirt rather than pushing it away, Booth experimented with a handkerchief over his mouth and sucking air through it to see how much dust he could gather up.
From there he built the first working version of his machine which required significant effort including expert operators and horses to pull the cart along. In 1903 Booth launched the British Vacuum Cleaner Company and went on to create a smaller electric-powered vacuum cleaner for sale.
Interestingly enough the first two machines were purchased by Lord Chamberlain to be used by the royal family with one ending up in Buckingham Palace and the other at Windsor Castle. This came after Booth’s Puffing Billing was commissioned to clean Westminster Abbey for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902. So impressed was Lord Chamberlain by it’s performance that he invited Booth to demo it to the royal family.
Hoover and Electrolux helped to pioneer smaller motor-powered vacuum cleaners which began to appear on the market prior to 1915.
