They’re more money than you might normally expect to spend on a vacuum cleaner and you want to know – are Dyson stick vacuums worth it? The simple answer yes they most certainly are but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Arriving at that answer is not a straightforward process so that’s why below we are going to explore it in more detail as we try to find out – are Dyson stick vacuums worth it? We’ll explore both sides of the arguement (for and against) to help you make up your own mind as to whether or not Dyson stick vacuums will be worth your money.

Are Dyson Stick Vacuums Worth It?

Let’s now delve into the heart of the debate by looking at both why the Dyson stick vacuums might be worth it and reasons why you may be better off without one.

Are Dyson Stick Vacuums Worth It: Yes They Are

Easy To Use

One of the major reasons why Dyson stick vacuums are worth it is because they’re so easy to use. Their lightweight nature compared to the minimalist design means they’re very easy to pick up and get to work.

The trigger release operating button makes them very straightforward to use and understand.

They Perform Great

Being easy to use on its own would certainly not make Dyson stick vacuums worth it considering how much you pay. That’s why its a delight that according to tons of user reviews as well as our own experience with a Dyson V7 at home, that Dyson stick vacuums perform their job so well.

Above all their suction tends to be powerful and consistent from beginning to end. They also work very well across multiple types of floors (carpet, hardwood and hard floors in general).

As they have motorised brush heads, unlike conventional vacuum cleaners, Dyson stick vacuums are very effective at picking up dust and debris across a range of surfaces.

Lightweight Design

If you’re like a lot of people that have stairs in their home one of the reasons you may not look forward to vacuuming your home is having to lug your vacuum cleaner up the stairs. Even if it’s not particularly heavy, if it’s corded trying to find a way to vacuum the stairs and balance the machine as you go up can be tiresome and also unsafe in some instances.

This is where Dyson stick vacuums excel. As they are very light (the Dyson V8 Absolute for example is 2.61kg), using them on the stairs and around the home generally tends to be much easier when compared to corded vacuum cleaners.

You also have the option of using them in the full stick mode or removing the shaft (wand) and using them in the hand-held mode with one of the attachments that come alongside it.

As well as making life easier on the stairs, the light weight nature of Dyson stick vacuums also makes it easier to vacuum clean areas like the curtains and removing dust webs from the ceilings.

Encourage More Frequent Cleaning

As Dyson cordless stick vacuums are so easy to use you may likely find that you are cleaning more often with one as there’s next to no setup time. If you’re in a busy household, particularly one with young children that need lots of attention, then this will come in particularly handy.

Unlike a corded vacuum cleaners which need to be retrieved from where they’re stored and then plugged in, cordless vacuums are just pick up and go. Having one less mental barrier to breakdown before you start vacuum cleaning means you’ll be able to fit it in a lot less time than you would need for a corded cleaner. This will likely result in you being able to do it more frequently which in turn will likely mean there’s actually less cleaning to do in the long-run as the dust and debris will not build up as much.

Living in a home with 3 toddlers we’ve found our Dyson V7 (similar to this) particularly helpful in this regard. When we are short of time but still need to get the vacuum out we know as long we can just pick it up and quickly get the job done before moving on to the next task.

Easy To Store

The slim nature of Dyson stick vacuum cleaners makes them quite easy to store around the home. Unlike our corded cylinder vacuum cleaner which needs a good amount of space in a storage cupboard to take its body and long hose and tube, our Dyson cordless stick is much easier to store. We keep it in the corner and barely notice its there.

Quite helpfully Dyson stick vacuums come with a wall mount that makes storage even easier.

The ease of storage makes Dyson stick vacuums an ideal option for many particularly those who live in apartments where storage cupboard space may be at a premium.

They Look Great

It’s not something you might ordinarily pay attention to when buying a vacuum cleaner but Dyson stick vacuums look amazing. Looking at the Dyson V7 Motorhead you get the sense it could have been made as a gadget for a superhero movie.

This may seem unimportant but crucially if you want to make use of the on the wall storage it’s quite nice knowing that you’re hanging up a device that looks sleek and well designed.

Dust Bin Emptying Is Easy

As you would expect with Dyson, their stick vacuums are quite straightforward when it comes to emptying the dust bin compartments. WIth a pull of a lever on the top of the main unit, you can empty the dust bin compartment straight into a dust bin. If done low in the dust bin, it can be fairly easy to avoid being exposed to the dust as you dispose of it.

The bagless nature of the Dyson stick vacuums is a real plus especially if you’ve always been used to bagged cylinder vacuums like we had.

Are Dyson Stick Vacuums Worth It: No, They Are Not

As with any appliance no matter how great, there are always two sides to its offering. Let’s now take a look at why Dyson stick vacuums may not be worth you spending your money.

Battery Span

As far as battery spans go for cordless vacuum cleaners, Dyson offers some of the best around. Their models are typically designed with two suction levels (a powerful default and a max alternative for tougher jobs). At their longest their models will run from around 20 – 45 minutes, going up alongside the price.

However, if you buy a Dyson stick vacuum as your first cordless cleaner you’ll have nothing to compare it against aside from your corded cleaners. As such to some this may be a limitation they are are not willing to contend with at the price you pay. However, this will be the case across stick vacuums in general. There are some models out there that may run longern but may not necessarily offer the same benefits as the Dyson range.

Nonetheless this is something to keep in mind when making your own mind up.

Trigger Release Can Be Tiring

One of the clever ways some of the Dyson cordless vacuums conserve their battery power is the use of a trigger release on/off button. The Dyson V7 for example has this feature which means the power is only consumed when you are pressing down and holding the trigger release button. This works well as it means as you move around the home you are not unnecessarily consuming power. With the Dyson V7 this feature feels well designed and suited to regular use.

However, on the flipside it can sometimes leave your hand feeling somewhat tired though cordless vacuums from any brand will need to be supported. This is where the weight of the model you choose becomes important and where Dysons do offer an advantage.

Don’t Expect The Same As You Get From A Corded Model

Dyson stick vacuum cleaners are great at what they do as our own experience with the V7 Motorhead and those users across their range. However, do not expect that you will get the exact experience you would get from a corded cylinder model for example. They are very different setups so their features will be different as well as performance.

For example some users of the Dyson stick models have complained that they tend to spit out larger items like bits of paper and are sometimes prone to getting blocked. With a cylinder vacuum cleaner like the Henry HVR160-11, you would not have this problem as it can sweep up a whole lot of stuff it comes across. It should be noted that regardless of which type of vacuum cleaner you are using it’s always a good idea to pick up larger items off the floor first before hoovering to ensure that you do not end up damaging your machine especially the filters.

Nonetheless this is a valid point to note and it is the case that even with the Dyson V7 Motorhead, it sometimes spits out bits of paper and once the dust bin capacity gets to a certain point it gets clogged quite easily. This means that we end up emptying the dust bin quite regularly – something that is recommended in any case.

Overall when it comes to comparing Dyson stick vacuums to traditional corded models it’s about recognising the areas you will have to make trade-offs and understanding how you feel about it. We happily use our Dyson V7 Motorhead in place of our prior Henry HVR160-11 bagged corded cylinder vacuum cleaner (which is excellent) for the convenience and ease of use but also its performance. But you’ll need to determine whether that would be right for you.

They’re Not The Only Game In Town

The Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners are very impressive propositions but they’re are not the only options for high end stick vacuums around. The Shark range of cordless vacuums for example offer a highly user rated set of alternatives which in some cases provide longer battery spans.

Conclusion: Are Dyson Stick Vacuums Worth It?

So after all is said and done, are Dyson stick vacuums worth it? In our view after using a Dyson V7 range model regularly for some time and researching the other models available, we believe that they are worth it. They offer great convenience as well as lightweight usage to encourage more regular cleaning. Whilst they most certainly have their limitations, overall they provide a great set of options as demonstrated by some very highly rated user reviews.
